Overview
The Communication Officer will support the planning and implementation of the REACH Africa initiative, focusing on strengthening community preparedness and engagement within emergency preparedness systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Member States to integrate community engagement into national emergency preparedness efforts.
- Contextualize and apply WHO guidance, tools, and frameworks.
- Contribute to the planning and organization of REACH Africa activities.
- Support the documentation of project implementation.
- Draft routine technical inputs, summaries, briefing notes, and donor-related updates.
- Facilitate coordination with WHO Country Offices and relevant technical teams.
- Support basic monitoring of project progress.
- Contribute to the development of project materials.
- Provide support to coordination between the PDU, Member States, and partners.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Experience
- 3 years of relevant experience.
- Experience working within the United Nations system, international NGOs, public health institutions, or similar multilateral or development settings.
- Experience contributing to the design, adaptation, or implementation of community engagement or RCCE strategies, particularly in preparedness or public health programmes.
- Exposure to training design, learning content development, or digital learning approaches used in public health or community preparedness initiatives.
- Familiarity with WHO emergency preparedness mechanisms, including the International Health Regulations (2005) and related monitoring or evaluation frameworks.
- Experience working in Africa or other low- and middle-income country settings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 suite and office IT equipment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in public health, communication, international development, social sciences, life sciences or any other related field of study.
- Certified training or coursework in project or programme management, health emergency preparedness, or related public health fields is desirable.
- Completion of WHO or UN training on Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Emergencies is desirable.
- Experience or training in digital learning approaches, health workforce capacity-building, or community systems strengthening is desirable.
- Additional specialized training in emergency preparedness, humanitarian response, or community-based programming is an asset.
