Overview
This internship opportunity is with the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in the Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC). The role focuses on data collection, analysis, and research related to commodity markets, particularly critical energy transition minerals.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect, compile, and validate quantitative and qualitative data on commodity markets, including production, trade flows, and policy developments in the minerals and metals sector.
- Analyze critical energy transition minerals to identify market and policy drivers, and evaluate their impacts on exporting and importing countries, supply security, and the energy transition.
- Monitor and document export restrictions on critical energy transition minerals, maintain and regularly update a dedicated database, and ensure the completeness and accuracy of all required information.
- Conduct targeted research based on analyzed data to support the preparation of policy briefs, background papers and publications on critical minerals for development in resource-rich countries.
- Contribute to research on value addition, diversification and benefit sharing and on a global frameworks for traceability, transparency, and accountability across the minerals value chain and compiling relevant best practices.
- Support the organization and preparation of intergovernmental meetings convened or facilitated by the Extractive Commodities Section, including the Global Commodities Forum and the Multi-year Expert Meeting on Commodities and Development.
- Identify potential speakers and panelists in coordination with supervisors and contribute to logistical arrangements.
- Assist in preparing background materials, presentations, and discussion inputs drawing on the intern’s analytical work.
Required Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Qualifications
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
- Should be computer literate in standard software applications.
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
- Knowledge of Excel package is required.
