Overview

Advise on strategies to build and strengthen national capacities and institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights. Ensure human rights issues are integrated into UN development cooperation programmes.

Tasks Summary

• Advise on strategies to build and strengthen national capacities and institutions for human rights promotion and protection.
• Plan and coordinate human rights activities, including from a gender perspective.
• Conduct research and analysis of human rights issues and their impact.
• Provide issue-based or situational assessments of legislative, policy or implementation gaps.
• Ensure human rights issues and gender equality dimensions are integrated into political, humanitarian and economic efforts.
• Define work plans for assigned areas.
• Represent UN human rights programme at meetings.
• Direct capacity-building efforts on human rights.
• Write reports, communications, briefings, and statements.
• May provide guidance to new/junior staff.

Experience Requirements

• A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area is required.
• Experience working at the field level with the United Nations Country Teams or similar is desirable.

Qualification Requirements

• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field.
• A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
