Overview

The Director of Internal Audit provides strategic leadership and overall management of the internal audit function, ensuring its independence, effectiveness, and alignment with WFP’s governance objectives and Global Internal Audit Standards.

Tasks Summary
  • Provide strategic leadership in formulating and implementing a comprehensive multi-year, risk-based, internal audit strategy.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of annual internal audit work plans.
  • Ensure internal audit strategies and recommendations proactively anticipate emerging organisational risks.
  • Oversee and develop the OIGA’s audit strategy in alignment with the Global Internal Audit Standards and WFP's strategy.
  • Provide overall leadership and accountability for the internal audit function.
  • Oversee the planning and delivery of internal audits across WFP operations.
  • Monitor and validate the disposition of audit observations.
  • Establish and maintain a robust quality assurance framework.
  • Build an integrated assurance approach in WFP.
  • Lead the preparation and presentation of periodic reports on internal audit activities.
  • Develop and implement a communication strategy that enhances understanding of the internal audit function.
  • Collaborate closely and work with the Office of Investigations and Inspections (OIGI).
  • Provide strategic leadership in managing and developing the skills and capabilities of OIGA staff.
  • Promote continuous learning and professional development within the internal audit function.
  • Foster collaboration and effective communication across organisational boundaries.
  • Act as the principal representative of the internal audit function within WFP and externally.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships.
  • Perform other duties as required by the Inspector General.
Experience Requirements

A minimum of 13 years progressively responsible professional experience in auditing, of which at least 5 years must be at the management level, including leading part or the whole of an internal audit function. In-depth knowledge and experience of working with the International Professional Practices Framework promulgated by the Institute of Internal Auditors. Relevant work experience in an international environment, either in the public or private sector is required; consulting experience is an advantage. Field experience is desirable.

Qualification Requirements

Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in business administration, public administration, audit, accounting, oversight, finance or other relevant fields; or First level degree in any of the above fields, in combination with a recognised professional auditing certification and relevant extensive professional experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Recognized professional certifications such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or National audit certification (such as Chartered Accountant (CA/ACA/ACCA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Expert-Comptable, etc.). Other specialist internal audit certifications, for example, Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), IT auditing qualification (e.g., ITAC / CISA), risk management (CRMA), and leadership (QIAL) desirable.

Other Details

Languages Required: Fluency in English.

Languages Preferred: Intermediate knowledge (level B) of an official UN language (Arabic, French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian), and/or Portuguese (a WFP working language).
