Overview

This internship focuses on news writing and reporting within the UN newsroom, specifically for the Kiswahili Language Unit. The role involves producing daily news, in-depth features, and multimedia products in Kiswahili.

Tasks Summary

• Drafting Kiswahili news articles by integrating and translating information from various sources.
• Proofreading news articles before and after publication.
• Assisting with fact-checking and background research.
• Assisting in the production of graphic, visual and audio content.
• Working on feature stories, conducting research and interviews, and drafting feature stories.
• Reviewing the partnerships database and looking for new digital media and other partners.
• Performing other duties as assigned, including outreach.

Experience Requirements

Qualification Requirements

• Enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, English and Kiswahili or translation studies (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
• OR enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, English, Kiswahili or translation studies (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
• Computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar.

Other Details

Languages Required: • Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required.

Languages Preferred: • Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Contract Duration: min 2 - max 6 months

Work Modality: New York or remote

Remuneration: Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
