Overview

This internship position is located in the Commodities Branch, Extractive Commodities Section of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The intern will assist in compiling information and data on commodities, conduct research, and support the preparation of relevant documents.

Tasks Summary
  • Assisting in compiling information and data on issues relating to trade in commodities, including research on the interactions between commodities and economic diversification, and their implications for development.
  • Assisting in quantitative and qualitative background research using statistical tools
  • Preparing short drafts on specific issues as indicated by the supervisors, including creating charts and graphs.
  • Provide substantive support to prepare relevant documents (e.g., presentations, letters, project documents and assessments) as required.
  • Assist with proofreading and editing publications.
  • Support other activities of the Section as required.
Experience Requirements

No working experience is required for this internship. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Experience in data processing and statistical analysis is desirable.

Qualification Requirements
  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
  • Have a background in economics, preferably with knowledge of commodity markets
  • Be conversant with statistical software (e.g. Stata)
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Other Details

Languages Required: Fluency oral and written in English is required for the internship.

Languages Preferred: Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is desirable

Contract Duration: maximum period of six months

Work Modality: in-person basis and/or remotely

Remuneration: The Internship Programme is unpaid. All costs of travel, accommodation, medical insurance and living expenses must be covered by the intern. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
