Overview

The Human Rights Officer will focus on human rights in the administration of justice, specifically detention and trial monitoring, and will report to the Deputy Head of Mission.

Tasks Summary
  • Leads teams and develops programmes on human rights in the administration of justice, specifically detention and trial monitoring.
  • Reviews, monitors and evaluates activities relating to the implementation of international human rights instruments.
  • Supports the work of treaty-established bodies and extra-conventional mechanisms and special procedures.
  • Prepares relevant human rights parts of reports.
  • Meets regularly with other stakeholders.
  • Works with UN and non-governmental programmes to integrate human rights.
  • Ensures up-to-date information regarding substantive matters in the field of human rights and makes recommendations.
  • Makes contact with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
  • Assists national stakeholders to develop and implement a training program in the field of human rights, administration of justice, international humanitarian law, and the rule of law.
  • Serves as head of unit with responsibility for carrying out work coordination and administrative functions.
  • Trains and supervises new/junior staff.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Experience Requirements

A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area is required. Experience in a conflict or post-conflict setting working on human rights monitoring is desirable. Experience developing programmes on human rights in the administration of justice is desirable. Managerial experience as a Team Leader in human rights Field Presence is desirable.

Qualification Requirements

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field. A first-level university degree in the abovementioned fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Languages Required: English is required.

Languages Preferred: Ukrainian is desirable. Russian is desirable.

Contract Duration: SIX (6) MONTHS, WITH POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION
