Overview

The Senior Legal Officer will advise the Director-General, Senior Officials, and UNOG Services on legal and policy issues. The role involves handling matters related to the Host Country Agreement and providing legal advice on various UNOG operations and agreements.


Key Responsibilities
  • - Takes the lead in identifying and addressing legal issues at UNOG.
  • - Advises the Director-General, Senior Officials, and UNOG Services on legal and policy issues.
  • - Provides legal advice to client departments and UN funds and programmes in Geneva.
  • - Handles matters related to the Host Country Agreement, including waiver of immunity requests.
  • - Assists UNOG Administration with legal implications of personal actions and advises staff on legal matters.
  • - Provides legal advice on UNOG’s tax status, property, assets, partnerships, and protection of the UN name and emblem.
  • - Reviews contracts, procurement actions, MOUs, and contribution/donation agreements.
  • - Serves as an ex-officio member on various committees.
  • - Provides advice on legal issues relating to the renovation of the Palais des Nations.
  • - Organizes and directs the annual International Law Seminar.
  • - Represents the Office on legal matters and participates in negotiations.
Required Experience

At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in legal practice, including legal analysis, research and writing is required. Experience providing advice on complex legal issues to United Nations leadership and high-level diplomats is required. Experience in the area of privileges and immunities of international organizations is desirable. Experience providing legal advice on procurement activities, preferably in the United Nations common system's context, is desirable.

Qualifications

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in law is required. A first university degree in law in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A degree in international administrative law or international public law is desirable.
