Overview
The role involves assisting in the regional coordination of land cover and land use activities, providing technical support in GIS and Remote Sensing, and contributing to project documentation and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in regional coordination of land cover/land use activities.
- Provide technical support in GIS and Remote Sensing.
- Assist in organizing and implementing regional project activities.
- Ensure documentation and archiving of technical information.
- Support international consultants in needs and gap assessments.
- Support organizing meetings with stakeholders.
- Support raising awareness on land monitoring.
- Provide support in organizing training/workshops.
- Provide technical assistance for national land cover legends development.
- Support the design and development of training programs and materials.
- Contribute to the development of technical guidance documents.
- Support the design of field data collection sample strategy.
- Provide daily support in field data collection.
- Provide support in satellite imagery classification.
- Provide daily support to the project technical working group.
- Provide technical support to develop land cover dataset.
- Populate FAO Land Cover Legend Registry.
- Assist in other project tasks.
Required Experience
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in spatial data handling and analysis, satellite data processing and management, GIS and remote sensing applications.
- Work experience in programming languages such as R and Python for GIS/RS.
- Work experience in international organizations and in projects supporting developing countries.
- Work experience on satellite image analysis, geospatial data and metadata management and processing.
- Work experience on cloud-computing platforms (e.g. SEPAL, Google Earth Engine).
- Work experience on batch-scripting for data processing, geo-statistical packages for automatic classifications.
- Work experience on capacity development and knowledge transfer on GIS/RS.
- Familiarity with the tools of FAO’s Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) standard.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Agricultural, GIS, Geography, Environmental Sciences or a closely related technical field.
