Overview

Conduct a technical feasibility study on soilless agricultural systems, assess local growing conditions, and recommend a sustainable system tailored to specific project needs and regional climate.


Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct a technical and feasibility study on soilless agriculture systems, including hydroponic.
  • Assess local growing conditions, including environmental conditions, land/space, and water availability.
  • Recommend the most suitable and cost-effective hydroponic system, including growing system, nutrient formulations, and lighting.
  • Estimate sustainable water, energy, and nutrient usage, and identify potential risks with mitigation measures.
  • Conduct a cost-benefit analysis for capital and operational expenditure.
  • Assess local market demand for hydroponic produce.
  • Engage stakeholders and communities for inputs.
  • Prepare presentations and briefing notes.
  • Join missions to Nauru for data collection and capacity building.
  • Contribute to co-design and visioning processes, including concept note development.
  • Draft Back-to-Office Reports and workshop proceedings.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Required Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in designing, building, and managing commercial hydroponic systems.
  • Extensive experience in nutrient management and chemistry.
  • Extensive experience in system design and engineering.
  • Extensive experience in environmental control.
  • Extensive experience in crop and substrate management.
  • Extensive experience in facility operation and data management.
  • Experience working with international organizations and managing climate change and health projects.
  • Experience in environmental health, including at least 3 years focused on climate change and its health implications.
  • Good knowledge of situation in Nauru and familiarity with Pacific Small Island Developing States.
  • Experience working with a cross-section of stakeholders, including senior government officials in small and vulnerable states.
  • Experience in working in Nauru or Pacific region will be an advantage.
Qualifications

• Advanced University degree from an institution recognized by the International Association of Universities (IAU)/UNESCO in horticulture, agriculture engineering, or closely related field.
