Overview

The Registrar of the Court is responsible for all departments and divisions of the Registry, reporting to the Court. The role involves judicial, diplomatic, and administrative duties.


Tasks Summary
  • Manage proceedings in cases before the Court, including case preparation.
  • Participate in drafting judgments and advisory opinions.
  • Draft and review legal texts, including substantive and procedural orders.
  • Maintain relations with parties to a case, receiving and transmitting applications, pleadings, and correspondence.
  • Ensure communications and notifications provided for by the Statute are issued.
  • Be present at Court and Chamber meetings, providing assistance and ensuring report preparation.
  • Keep the General List of cases, sign judgments, advisory opinions, and orders.
  • Take responsibility for translation, printing, and publication of Court documents.
  • Maintain custody of Court seals, stamps, and archives.
  • Manage the Court’s external relations and act as a communication channel.
  • Manage external correspondence and be available for consultation.
  • Manage diplomatic relations with States, UN organs, international organizations, and the host government.
  • Maintain relations with the press, issue information about Court activities, and manage publications.
  • Ensure information about the Court is accessible to governments, courts, societies, faculties, and media.
  • Manage all aspects of the internal administration of the Registry.
  • Be responsible for the Court’s financial management, including budget preparation and implementation.
  • Represent the Court at competent financial organs of the United Nations.
  • Make arrangements for translations and interpretations into French and English.

Experience Requirements
  • A minimum of 15 years of professional experience in the practice of public international law and international dispute resolution.
  • Progressively responsible managerial experience, preferably in a judicial institution or an international organization.
  • Proven supervisory abilities in a multilingual and multicultural environment.
  • Experience in multilateral and/or bilateral diplomacy.
  • Excellent knowledge of the jurisprudence and procedure of the International Court of Justice.

Qualification Requirements
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, with a specialization in public international law.
  • A relevant combination of university degree, legal training and qualifications, and professional experience in public international law may be considered as equivalent.
Other Details

Languages Required: English (UN Level IV Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) French (UN Level IV Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking)

Languages Preferred: Knowledge of one or more of the other official United Nations languages (Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Russian, Spanish) would be highly desirable.

Contract Duration: Seven years

Remuneration: • Basic salary and post adjustment. • Emoluments are free of all taxation. • 30 days of annual leave. • Home travel every two years. • Education grant for dependent children. • Pension plan. • Subsidized medical insurance.
