Overview

Provide technical expertise on ship systems and equipment and the implementation of the Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) methodology. Act as Secretary for the Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE) and implement the FSA programme.


Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out work on ship systems and equipment and formal safety assessment (FSA).
  • Act as Secretary of the Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE), including preparation, organization, drafting, editing, and follow-up of meetings.
  • Implement the FSA programme and coordinate the work of the FSA Experts Group.
  • Carry out Secretariat functions and provide technical expertise to the MSC and its subsidiary bodies.
  • Respond to technical queries and prepare reports, publications, presentations, and circular letters.
  • Carry out missions and represent the Organization at national and international conferences.
  • Provide support and technical expertise to the Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division (TCID).
  • Assist in the coordination and support of other officers and research assistants/secretaries.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Required Experience

Minimum seven years’ work experience in at least one of the following fields is essential: naval architecture; marine engineering; shipboard fire safety; shipboard life-saving appliances; which may include approval of ships’ Fire Control and/or Safety Equipment Plans, ship surveying or equivalent engineering experience. Experience in project management or/and the delivery of capacity-building programmes/activities is essential. Experience of participation in international technical meetings and ship survey experience based on IMO regulations and classification society rules; IT skills (databases, website data, etc.); and management skills are advantageous.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree* in one of the following fields is essential: naval architecture, marine engineering or similar technical subjects. *A first-level university degree with four additional years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Proficiency in English is essential, with excellent drafting skills.
Languages Preferred
Working knowledge and ability to understand complex technical issues in other official languages of the UN will be an asset.
Contract Duration
Fixed-term for two years (first year is probationary) with the possibility of further extension, subject to satisfactory performance.

Remuneration
US$ 86,027 net per annum, plus post adjustment (currently US$ 67,961). Salary is free of income tax in the United Kingdom.
